ADSL network

1392798Sitting at one of my favorite coffee shops having a double Espresso, and just realized, Its already the middle of February!  Wow time really flies..

We have been busy with working on our network and making sure all of our suppliers are working in harmony from normal network product suppliers to our internet back bone suppliers.

Customers don’t always realize or understand how an internet network work and how much work goes into making this run as well as possible when they have issues.

The above diagram shows a very complex ADSL network.  You have switches, D-Slams, Cable, routers, and this is all excluding the client own network at home or office.  There needs to be redundancy in place to ensure if one router goes down that it will switch over to another…  basically the network is doubled in size!

Herewith some frequently asked questions to our uncapped ADSL products:

How can you be so cheap? What’s the “Catch” here?

We decided we would take the money we planned to spend on advertising and use it to subsidise our ADSL packages. We decided to use this monthly marketing budget to buy extra ADSL bandwidth and pass this extra bandwidth and saving onto anybody who signed up for any of our ADSL packages.

How is it possible that we are offering such low prices per GB?

If you sign up we will subsidise the cost of your bandwidth with our planned monthly marketing budget (as explained above). We are not getting a special deal from any ADSL provider. We are paying the same wholesale rates as other companies selling ADSL.

Can I use the bandwidth anytime? Or is it limited (i.e. only 6 PM to 6 AM)?

The bandwidth is applicable 24 hours a day and there is no specific time limitation as to when you can use it. You can use it at any time of the day or night and it will cost you the same.

Can I use this bandwidth for both local and overseas websites?

Yes – the bandwidth can be used for both local and international sites and downloads.

Is my telephone line enabled for DSL service already?

Please contact Telkom customer services to confirm. If it is not then you need to ask Telkom to enable it for you.

What do I need to have ADSL?

You will need 3 things:

1.        A Telkom line with ADSL service enabled

2.        An ADSL modem or router

3.        An Intense Broadband ADSL Account

Can I install DSL on a prepaid telephone line?

ADSL service is only supported on an account with a monthly subscription from Telkom.

Do I need to have a separate telephone line to have Intense Broadband ADSL?

ADSL allows you to share an Intense Broadband high speed internet connection & your voice calls over the same physical telephone line.

Do I have DSL service in my area?

Please click here to verify whether your exchange offers DSL service.

Can Intense Broadband make my telephone line DSL ready?

Yes we can, please visit our contact us page for more info.

How long does it take for my ADSL service to be active after I signup?

Intense Broadband will activate your ADSL account within 24 hours of your signup. Generally within 5-10 minutes.

Is Intense Broadband ADSL shaped or unshaped?

Intense Broadband provides a world class unshaped ADSL service for our Capped and Prepaid Accounts.

For our Uncapped accounts, we provide semi-shaped bandwidth especially for torrents. We employ a Quality of Service which delivers the best possible internet experience. We give highest priority to real time services such as browsing, streaming, gaming and VoIP, with lower priority on Peer to Peer downloads and torrents.

Is my IP address always the same if I have an Intense Broadband ADSL account?

Your IP address will change everytime you make a connection to the ADSL server unless you take one of our Static IP accounts.

What do I do if I reach my bandwidth cap?

Intense Broadband provides a top up service which you can use to refill your ADSL account.

Do I have to sign a contract to get Intense Broadband ADSL?

Intense Broadband offers a month to month service, no contracts – no strings attached.

What DSL line speed do I need, 1Mbps, 2Mbps, 4Mbps or 10Mbps?

The speeds above refer to how fast you will download data from the internet. We recommend the 1024Kbps or 2048Kbps for home users and the 4-10Mbps for businesses and heavy internet users.

Also some info on ADSL speeds:

It is important to realise that the rated maximum bandwidth of a DSL connection often cannot be reached. In addition, your actual DSL speed will vary according to the following factors:

  • Quality of your phone line – areas with better copper wiring can achieve somewhat faster DSL speeds.
  • Length of the phone line between the residence and the phone company hub (exchange hub). DSL technology is “distance sensitive” – its performance decreases significantly as you get further away from this hub.
  • Service glitches. While normally a constant, DSL speed can suddenly drop if the service provider has technical difficulty with their network. Speeds should return to normal after a few minutes or hours.

However, there are other factors that you can control directly to increase your DSL speed. These include:

  • Spyware on computer(s). Even when the DSL network may be functioning at full speed, spyware programs may be consuming the bandwidth, robbing your DSL speed. Anti-spyware programs should be run regularly on networks to prevent this problem.
  • Wireless router. Routers sit between your computers and the Internet connection. If not functioning properly, a router can greatly limit the DSL speed achievable on all computers. Temporarily connecting a computer directly to the Internet can help diagnose this situation.
  • Slow wireless network connection. In extreme cases, a very slow Wi-Fi connection between a computer and a wireless home network will not keep pace with the speed of the DSL Internet connection. Improving the quality of the Wi-Fi connection will solve this problem.
  • Old computer(s). Very old computers lacking sufficient processing power or memory cannot keep pace with a high-speed DSL connection. You can verify this problem by comparing the DSL speed between computers in your home or buy a new computer.

Have a good week!
